So Many Fillers: Choosing the Right One for You

Fillers are used to plump the lips, erase wrinkles, hide scars caused by trauma, surgery or acne and add volume to the face. When dermal fillers are injected correctly by a skilled and experienced injector, the result is a very natural looking and youthful appearance. Filler injections can be administered safely and quickly with minimal discomfort, and some also provide results instantly. There are many types of fillers available.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. It gets broken down by the natural elimination processes and has a long-term effect on our skin by stimulating skin cells to produce elastin, collagen and more hyaluronic acid. The results are entirely reversible. There are three primary HA fillers:

Restylane products

Restylane products are more cohesive and stiffer, and as a result, they hold together better than other fillers. They are great for providing structural support to the face. Restylane is used for marionette lines and nasolabial folds. Results generally last from six to nine months.

– Restylane Silk is perfect for augmenting lip volume, enhancing the outline of the lips and filling in the lines around the mouth. Results generally last from six to nine months.

– Restylane Lyft works well to add volume to the mid-face, define the chin and lift sagging facial skin. Results generally last from 12 to 18 months.

Juvéderm products

Juvéderm products are more moldable and softer than most other fillers. They are great for adding volume to different areas of the face. Juvéderm is used for nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Results last for up to a year.

Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite – a substance that has been used for decades for facial reconstruction. It is used improve facial folds and to enhance the jawline and cheekbones. This filler can be seen in x-rays and is not made of natural components; it is non-reversible with hyaluronidase. Results last from one to one-and-a-half years.

What Are the Risks?

Never plan any social events around treatment time and give yourself at least two weeks after your treatment to go to social outings in the event of swelling or bruising. The risk of bruising can be increased by alcohol, ibuprofen, omega-3 fatty acids and aspirin, so avoid these for at least two weeks prior to your treatment. Swelling and redness can occur for up to two weeks if more than four syringes are used.

How Long Will Results Last?

Hyaluronic fillers generally last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on what kind of hyaluronic acid filler is used and how many syringes are injected. The more filler used, and the more it is injected, the longer it will last. If your skin develops excess sagging due to smoking or you lose weight, you may need injections more frequently.

Can Anyone Have Dermal Fillers?

Individuals who have herpes blisters in the area to be treated or who are allergic to hyaluronic acid or licodaine should never have dermal filler treatment as well as women who are breastfeeding or pregnant.
